We Know Rental Cars. Billboard Ads? Not So Much.

There are two possibilities: Either you already know us because we rent out decent cars at decent prices. Or you’ll get to know us for exactly that. To help with the latter, we put up two billboards. And, well, things didn’t exactly go as planned.

We’re not exactly marketing pros. We’d much rather play a round of Top Trumps with our car fleet than sit down to write this blog—which, truth be told, we didn’t even want to start. So, why are we blogging now?

Let’s start at the beginning: We want to grow and reach people who don’t know us yet. So, we booked two billboards in Glarnerland, right by the highway. Lots of traffic equals lots of traffic on our website, right?

But what do you actually say on a billboard? Not as easy as it sounds. We put our heads together until they were smoking, like tires on a racetrack. After five hours of brainstorming, we landed on what we thought was a winning idea: "Rent Cars with Heart." It made sense—after all, no one rents a car with kidneys, a liver, or lungs.

Plus, we knew from YouTube videos that a good ad needs a USP (Uniquely Silly Pitch, as we like to call it) to stand out.

And then, everything went downhill. You know how it is: a bit of holiday stress here, a mulled wine there, and the bookkeeping still waiting to be done. Somewhere along the way, our copywriter made a typo. Or maybe it was autocorrect. Or ChatGPT? Honestly, we don’t remember anymore.

Anyway, here’s what ended up on the billboard:

So, our first (and only) billboard campaign turned into a flop. Which is frustrating, because now all of Glarnerland still doesn’t know how much heart (and brains) we put into what we do.

Oh, and about “Hertz.” Unfortunately, that’s not a thing everyone knows—it’s a unit of frequency, referring to cycles per second. Only nerds in the automotive industry care about Hertz, like when it comes to AC power at charging stations.

But if you already know us, you know we really do have heart and try to see the silver lining. Here’s the good news: While we might mess up words, we’re much better with numbers. For example, when it comes to pricing our rental cars:
